Precision Print Production: CMYK Color Separation & Pantone Spot Matching

By Visual Computing & Brand Identity Review Board

Creative & Technical Insights

Commercial offset and digital print engineering: prepress color separations, rich black formulas (C60 M40 Y40 K100), spot varnish trapping, and bleed tolerances.

Prepress engineering bridges digital RGB design and physical ink deposition. Proper trapping, bleed allowances, and Pantone spot matching guarantee flawless print runs.

1. Prepress Technical Standards

  • Rich Black vs. Plain Black: Plain 100% K looks washed out on large solids; rich black (C60 M40 Y40 K100) provides deep, saturated tone.
  • Bleed & Safety Margins: 0.125-inch (3mm) external bleed and 0.25-inch internal safety margins protect critical typography during guillotine cutting.
  • Total Area Coverage (TAC): Capping total ink density under 300% prevents ink drying issues and page offsetting on coated stocks.
